Jamaica School Administrative System (JSAS) Detail

School Management Component

The School Management component of the EEH project contributes to educational transformation by the following:

The School Management team is utilizing the Jamaica Schools Administrative System Software (JSAS), a customized database developed and introduced by the former New Horizons for Primary Schools Project (NHP) to assist project school administrators in the collection and manipulation of data on students, teachers and schools. The system has all the power and benefits of an electronic database, facilitating input, storage, editing, retrieval and printing of data. It is interactive, easily filtering and locating information as specified by the user. It has easy to use options for inputting data, utilizing drop-down menus and providing helpful screen tips. JSAS operates in two modes: Administrator and Teacher modes, both of which are password protected. Having this security feature preserves the integrity of the database by restricting access to sensitive information by the general user. It is a time saving support system for schools and can work adequately in both networked (multi-user) and stand-alone environments (single-user). JSAS is also well supported by its own Administrative Handbook, User Guide and Setup Guide manuals.

JSAS is designed specifically for primary-level schools and is capable of fulfilling most of the administrative requirements of these institutions. It registers students, facilitates class placements, records daily attendance, generates term and year reports, tracks and ranks student performance – individually or by class and gender. JSAS stores students’ results for all National Assessment Programme (NAP) tests (Grades 1, 3, 4 and 6). JSAS stores and produces information on teachers - their qualifications, class attendance history and student historical performance. It has a tailored “Principal’s Page” which allows the principal an extensive overview, from his/her desk, of overall teacher and class performance, attendance and school size. Additionally, JSAS possesses the ability to display results in tables and colour-coded bar graphs and pie charts. The system has been fundamental in facilitating data-driven decision making in project schools. Training on the use of the JSAS has been provided to selected teachers from all 71 project schools and participating NGOs.
