Expanding Educational Horizons (EEH)
The EEH is the third phase of the New Horizons Project (NHP), first implemented in June 1998 in collaboration with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Juárez and Associates (J&A), and the Jamaican Ministry of Education (MOE). The project is assisting the MOE to improve educational achievement in 71 primary schools, with special attention to the performance of boys, and to increase the quality of academic interventions for at-risk youth in six participating non-governmental organizations.
A major change occurring in the Jamaican educational landscape is the shift in definition of a well educated student. It has moved from one of merely increased academic performance to one of increased competency in students’ attempts to better understand the world around them. To this end, the EEH is furthering the student centred educational model which makes a direct link between curriculum and the lives of students, facilitating creativity and improvement by taking advantage of continuous developments in technology, such as the Internet, for instruction and learning.
